Fire Engine Visit

If you haven't had your local firemen visit your library, you have been missing out! I invited a crew and engine to come visit the library on a Thursday morning so pre-k kids and toddlers could see the truck up close and personal. They LOVED it!

Kids took turns holding hoses, opening doors, trying on hats, climbing into seats, and taking pictures with the firemen. How great for them to do some hands on exploring of one of their favorite things to read about in books! I hosted this program in September to capitalize on beautiful Utah weather and give littles who may be missing their older siblings at school something exciting to anticipate. Our turn out was excellent with around 30 kids and 25 parents.

I even learned something new. Fire trucks have ladders and no water. Fire engines carry water and no ladders. Fire quints carry both, but they aren't very good at either. In the words of Bill Nye, "Noooow you know..."

If you haven't heard of sensory bins get to Google now! Sensory bins are tubs full of things for kids to play with that provide them with unique sensory experiences (sight, smell, touch, etc) that lead to learning, especially when the experience is facilitated by an adult.

I love to host this program outdoors for a couple of reasons. First, it gets messy. Like really messy. Second, we have a beautiful back patio perfect for programming. Then finally, there are so many sensory experiences to be had outdoors that this program just fits among the flowers and trees.

I set up 6 tubs that kids can either move freely between or, if my crowd is too big, stay at for timed segments. My tubs have held dyed rice, dyed noodles, cloud dough, diy flubber, and water beads. Pinterest is your best bet for great recipes and ideas. Follow my board if you are interested! I also pull out all of my instruments for kids to make noise with. The cacophony can get overwhelming but it stays happy. End with bubbles and you are sure to have a hit program!
