I think this Shel Silverstein poem is particularly lovely. Hand out a star prop to each child as well as a scarf and let them pretend to polish the stars while you recite this poem.
Somebody has to go polish the stars,
They're looking a little bit dull.
Somebody has to go polish the stars,
For the eagles and starlings and gulls
Have all been complaining they're tarnished and worn,
They say they want new ones we cannot afford.
So please get your rags
And your polishing jars,
Somebody has to go polish the stars.
Have the children admire their stars when they've finished polishing. For extra fun have them all put there stars on a flannel board and admire the pretty night sky they made together.
Use with a night, stars, moon, or space story time.
